Do you think it’s better to believe?

Do you think it’s better to believe?

I believe in fairiesWhen we’re kids, we believe in so many things.  Do you think it’s better to believe?  Sure, some may think you’re naive, but to me, I would prefer to bring a little magic and positivity into the world than the harsh reality that life sometimes holds!

I remember doing the play Peter Pan in 6th grade.  My friend Marla played Tinkerbell, and she was so worried that when it came to her famous dying scene, no one would clap.  Can you imagine that?  Who wouldn’t clap?  You’d have to have a pretty hard heart not to.  Something just comes over you as you watch the play.  You just DO IT!  You clap because something inside you wants to believe that this person on stage is a fairy and she really is dying and YOU can help make a difference…all by clapping!

The same holds true for the Tooth Fairy (Flossie, as she is more formally known in our house) and Santa and even the Easter Bunny.

For me, it’s not a religious thing.  It’s a magical whimsical thing.  No one should take that sense of magic away from us or our kids.  Does Emily really believe that Santa comes down a chimney and goes to every house in the world in one night?  Probably not.  But she never says he isn’t real.  There is part of her that wants to keep that magic alive. I can’t blame her for that, nor should anyone.  There is still something special about getting a note from Flossie with a little toy or some money.  It isn’t about the gift. It’s about the note from Flossie.  It’s the little extra touches that make it so special.  Those notes are saved, long after the toy is gone or the money is spent.  Why?  Because there is something magical about it — even if deep down they know it can’t be real.  There is part of them that still holds out hope that it can be real.

I think that hope is some of the best positive energy in the world.  It reminds us to be kind and caring to one another and allows for whimsey in our ever-changing (and sometimes negative) world. I wouldn’t want to lose that.
