Sometimes You Need Something Silly

internshipYou know, sometimes seeing a silly movie can turn your day around!  Today was lousy!  I felt like I failed on so many fronts.  I felt angry and frustrated and just wanted to feel better.  I watched The Internship.  A silly movie with Vince Vaughn and it made me smile.  I loved the premise of these two guys getting a summer internship at Google.  These guys didn’t know how the computer world worked. They didn’t know HTML and coding (much like me), but they kept a positive attitude and believed in themselves (and their team) and came out ahead in the end!

It was an awesome underdog story and I can’t say no to the underdog!  I loved seeing the Google offices too.  Such a different world than when I worked in offices.  Companies like Google, Pixar, and Zappos know that giving their employees a place to meditate or nap or bringing in massages once a week will get the best out of them.

Sometimes, being a mom who works from home can feel lonely.  How do you connect when you are on your own all day?  What do you do for YOU?  The most important rule is to make time for you to take care of you.  Schedule the time for workouts if you have to.  Schedule a massage every now and then.  Make time to have lunch with someone else.  It is important to engage with others…even if it’s just a walk around the block to get a latte and say good morning to another person in line!!

Don’t be too hard on yourself.  There are going to be days when it feels like all you get are yellow lights and the DMV screws up your pink slip, causing you to tighten your belt once again for another month.  Just breathe.  Yell a couple of expletives into the air (not at anyone in particular) and move through it.  This is a hiccup.  I write this for myself as much as for anyone else.

You will grow and become stronger from this experience.  STOP THAT EYE ROLLING!  It all works out in the end.  If it hasn’t worked out yet, it is clearly not the end!
